A Renton man who allegedly stole a Hummer and used it as a battering ram in multiple Bellevue burglaries has been apprehended by police.

The man, who has been identified as Cameron J. Childs, is believed to have stolen a 2006 white Hummer H3 from a Bellevue resident on April 17, and then used it to drive through the garage door of a Lakemont neighborhood residence and steal possessions. The suspect was also linked to a second Lakemont burglary, according to police.

On April 29, King County Deputies recovered the stolen Hummer in Renton and discovered a backpack inside containing numerous documents listing the suspect’s name. Members of the Bellevue Police’s Special Enforcement Team then began tracking Childs, 20.

They learned that Childs had allegedly been involved in a March 21 incident during which he intentionally struck two occupied police cars during an escape attempt in Renton.

After apprehending Childs at his Renton residence on May 6, investigators learned that the suspect had reportedly bragged about hitting the police cars and using the stolen Hummer to commit multiple burglaries to an inmate at the King County Jail. He made these statements despite a recorded message warning him that all calls made by jail inmates are recorded and subject to disclosure.

Childs has been charged with assault 2nd degree for allegedly ramming into the Renton police cars, and numerous other charges related to the Bellevue incidents are currently pending additional investigation by Bellevue Detectives.
