A Snohomish couple feels they’ve had a piece of their lives restored after a woman returned the $20,000 wedding ring she stole at the Nordstrom Rack in Factoria.

Sroy Lee McCarthy had been shopping at The Rack on Sept. 19, and left her purse unattended while she tried on shoes. A Chinese national woman named Xia Liu was believed to be the person seen in security footage approach and steal McCarthy’s purse, which had the ring inside.

Police report the theft suspect returned the ring at the Bellevue Police Department on Tuesday, after a family member saw video of the woman on Washington’s Most Wanted. The suspect was arrested and later released.

“First response was disbelief, I’ll just say that,” said Brian McCarthy about the return of his wife’s ring in a phone interview Wednesday. “… It was a one-of-a-kind and you can’t replace something that has those memories built into it.”

He said it was the woman’s daughter who convinced her to return the ring. Now that they have it back, the McCarthy’s don’t want to press charges, he said.

“We went through hell the last 2 1/2 weeks, and now she’s going to have to do the same thing,” Brian McCarthy said. “We don’t want that to happen. We got back what we wanted.”
