Sewer utility crews responded in just five minutes to an overflow at King County’s Bellevue Pump Station around noon Thursday following a power surge that caused three pumps to temporarily shut down.

It’s believed the power surge is related to a fire at one of Puget Sound Energy’s electrical substations in Redmond.

Crews estimate that 7,000 gallons of wastewater overflowed for five minutes through the pump station’s outfall into the Meydenbauer Slough, which is a tributary to Lake Washington. Crews were able to reset the pumps and the facility is again operating normally.

County staff took water quality samples in the slough and the lake, posted public areas as closed, and notified health and regulatory agencies about the overflow. Crews are also cleaning up trash and visible material.
