Work began Tuesday, July 15 at AtWork! to convert their sheltered workshop building at 15155 Bel-Red Road in Bellevue into the agency’s expanded corporate headquarters and training facility.

The organization is an employment provider for disabled individuals.

Built in 1979 with funds secured by Washington State Referendum 37, Handicapped Facilities Bonds “to promote economic progress and full employment”, the facility was used for 28 years as a sheltered workshop for persons with disabilities.

In 2007 AtWork! closed the workshop and redirected its strategy towards putting individuals on a pathway to employment in the community. Remaining manufacturing and assembly operations are now housed in the Issaquah facility at 690 NW Juniper St.

In addition to the agency’s corporate headquarters, the Bel-Red Road facility will be renovated to include a training facility and additional leasable space, providing income to support the not-for-profit agency.

AtWork! was developed in 1998 from a merger between the original owner of the Bel-Red Road facility Custom Industries, established in 1962 , and Community Enterprises of Issaquah, established in 1965. The agency provides assessments, skill exploration and training, job development, and ongoing job coaching and support for individuals with disabilities.

Building renovation is expected to be completed in six months and a grand opening is planned for January, 2009.
