For Safeway shoppers, the days of waiting for the Sunday paper to clip coupons are numbered.
Thursday the Bellevue Way location rolled out the beginning of it’s Just For U application, an online/mobile program that gives shoppers targeted savings based on what they buy at the store. Shoppers only need to load their Club Card and some basic identification to be eligible for the program. Once shoppers have registered, coupons can be viewed on an Android or iPhone, or online for those without a smartphone, and used in store.
“It’s a new way of shopping. No one else is doing this,” said Rochele Anderson, store manager of the Bellevue Way location.
This week, the new program is being introduced in Washington, Oregon and Montana. It has been under development for more than a year and a half, said Mir Aamir, president of customer loyalty for Safeway. Aamir said the time was right because consumers have access to the technology needed, and habits of finding deals online have become second nature to customers.
More importantly, the new program will weed out coupons useless to customers. It is expected that customers will save between 10 and 20 percent on their bills through the use of coupons given to them based on past purchases, said Steve Frisby, president of the Seattle division.
One of the first to sign up was Ali Henning. For Henning, a Bellevue resident who often shops at the Bellevue Way location, the new program was a welcome change. She said about half the time she goes to the grocery store, she will have clipped coupons in preparation. The online option will be easier for her, as well as a benefit to Safeway. Many coupons are applicable at different stores, but this program gives Safeway a way to standout, Henning said.
“I think it’s a good way to keep customers and have them stay loyal to the store,” she said.
