After a month in which speeders caught on camera in two elementary school zones received warnings, the city begins issuing fines this month.

Part of a pilot program approved by the City Council to improve traffic safety, automated cameras capture images of the offending vehicle and license plate, and a video of the incident. The cameras were installed near Stevenson and Lake Hills elementary schools, in locations with a history of speeding violations.

To accustom drivers to the new enforcement tool, only warnings were issued to speeders in September. More than 1,000 courtesy notices were mailed. Starting Monday, Bellevue Police will begin issuing citations with an associated fine of $124.

“Our goal is to increase pedestrian and bicyclist safety near elementary schools, where so many children are present. We urge drivers to become aware of their speed and slow down in school zones,” said Capt. John Manning.

American Traffic Solutions manages the cameras for Bellevue. Before citations are mailed to the registered owners of cars photographed speeding, Bellevue Police officers will review and confirms each violation.
