Four multi-family buildings are planned for construction at the former site of Angelo’s Nursery, just north of Crossroads in the Overlake area.
The buildings, which will be located at 2070 NE Bel-Red Road, will house approximately 450 units and provide 600 parking stalls both above and below ground.
Goodman Real Estate (GRE), a Seattle firm, applied for the permit in early November, and tentatively plans to have the project completed by the end of 2014.
“We’re now working on the design and hope to be submitting a design packet toward the end of the year,” said Brad Reisinger, a project manager with GRE.
The space, formerly occupied by Angelo’s nursery, has been considered for several different uses since 2007, when it closed. Puget Sound Energy wanted to build an electric substation on the site and Crescent View Investments, a Canadian firm, shared plans to build a hotel and senior housing in the space. PSE subsequently built a substation on the other side of Bel-Red.
If approved, the buildings could be up to six stories tall. Construction would begin in July of 2013.
GRE will likely save room for commercial retail space in the ground floor of one building. Though in a meeting Tuesday night, GRE said that space may be reverted to residential use, if there isn’t demand for retail.
Reisinger said that he expects the building will have plenty of interest with Microsoft headquarters just up the road.
“Bellevue needs housing,” said Reisinger, “with the job center that it’s become.”
