Seventeen Bellevue-area students honored by American Association of University Women

Seventeen Bellevue-area high school students will be honored Wednesday, April 21 at a reception sponsored by the Lake Washington Branch of the American Association of University Women as a part of the AAUW Scholar Recognition Program. The goal of the Scholar Recognition Program is to encourage young women to pursue careers involving mathematics, science, or technology.

Seventeen Bellevue-area high school students will be honored April 21 at a reception sponsored by the Lake Washington Branch of the American Association of University Women as a part of the AAUW Scholar Recognition Program. The goal of the Scholar Recognition Program is to encourage young women to pursue careers involving mathematics, science, or technology.

The students will be honored at 6 p.m. in the board room of the Bellevue School District, 12241 Main Street.

Emily Yang, the speaker at this year’s event, is a young woman who was recognized by the program in 2005. She is a recent graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, interned for General Mills in

Minneapolis and Microsoft in Beijing, and is currently employed at

Microsoft.

For outstanding performance in math, science or technology, each young woman was given a Certificate of Excellence, a scholar pin, and a bouquet of flowers.

The outstanding scholars recognized were:

Science Scholars: Katherine Long, Bellevue HS; Victoria Sewell,

International School, Simone Geraud, Sammamish HS; Priyanka Saha,

Interlake HS; Martina Unutzer, Mercer Island HS; and Kathie Wang,

Newport HS.

Mathematics Scholars: Connie Wan, Newport HS; Courtney Carbonetti,

Bellevue HS; Kelly Trsek, International School; Kelsey Davies,

Sammamish HS; Olivia Domini, Interlake HS; and Alisa Owens, Mercer

Island, HS.

Technology Scholars: Tiffany Hou, Newport HS; Sione Lister, Bellevue HS; Rachel Gebhart, International School; Anu Gadwal, Interlake HS, and Ella Mathews, Mercer Island HS.
