A section of road in Downtown Bellevue will shut down Friday, March 25 for good.

Southeast First Place, a residential street just a block from Main Street and connected to 112th Avenue Southeast, will be closed permanently as the Sound Transit East Link Extension begins work on a tunnel connecting the light rail line to Downtown Bellevue.

Crews will close the road on March 25 and will begin demolition of 10 structures around the road as well as on Main Street and 112th Avenue Southeast in mid-April.

The rail line will extend from the Bellevue Park and Ride adjacent to Mercer Slough along 112th until it gets a block from Main Street.

The line will then enter a tunnel that will go under the current location of Southeast First Place and then run underneath 110th Avenue Northeast for three blocks before emerging at a station at Bellevue City Hall.

The line will become elevated heading east over Interstate 405 and will stop again near Overlake Hospital before continuing to the Spring District, Bel-Red and into Redmond.

As part of initial construction for the tunnel project, crews will put up temporary fencing and erosion control. The existing structures will be demolished, and tree removal and site grading will follow.

Actual excavating work on the tunnel will begin this fall.
