Many low-income families and individuals in King County are unaware of the government assistance for which they qualify – assistance that may help them achieve financial stability. To counter that, United Way has created a new program, Bridge the Basics.
Under the program, volunteers throughout the community help people sign up for the public benefits they need and deserve. The program focuses on applications for basic food (food stamps), utility assistance and affordable healthcare for children.
Volunteers must be willing to commit to 2-3 shifts per month for six months. The a long-term position has proven to be a meaningful experience for volunteers who are ready to invest their time.
Those interested don’t need any experience; a day of training is provided in September. Volunteers need an outgoing personality and a willingness to learn. Proficiency in a second language is desirable, but not required.
People can visit here and click the orange “Register to be a Bridge to Basics volunteer now!” link at the bottom of the page.
Once registered, United Way trainers will work with people to set you up with a location and shift time that fits their schedule.
