The Bellevue Police Department has cleared Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch in an aggravated assault case stemming from a Sunday report from a woman in a downtown apartment, who is now being investigated for allegedly making a false report to law enforcement.
An initial release from the BPD stated a woman reported to police Lynch was the suspect in an alleged assault and property damage at the apartment, reporting the incident at 2:30 p.m. Sunday – 12 hours after the alleged assault occurred.
“The Bellevue Police Department has determined that Marshawn Lynch was not involved in last weekend’s property damage and assault case in any way,” a Wednesday revised news release from the BPD states. “This case remains an open and active investigation. We appreciate the cooperation we have received (original release: from Mr. Lynch and) the Seahawks organization during this investigation.”
The Seahawks responded to the allegations on Tuesday with a statement they had spoken with Lynch, and believed the claim was “bogus.”
According to CrimeMapping.com, the alleged assault was reported to have occurred on the 11100 block of Northeast Eighth Street.
The investigation was the sole assignment of one Bellevue detective, who Police Ofc. Seth Tyler said had been working as fast as possible to determine the validity of the accusations. As the investigation remains active, it is not yet clear whether the woman who made the claim is now under investigation for falsely naming Lynch as her assailant.
Police on release of Lynch’s name
The Reporter initially contacted the Bellevue Police Department on Monday to determine the validity of a Twitter post by @dvainio (David Vainio of Seattle) stating Lynch had been arrested in Bellevue.
Tyler told the Reporter Lynch had not been arrested, later releasing a statement that the Seahawks running back had been accused of assault and property damage at a downtown Bellevue apartment.
“The release was sent out because of inaccurate information on Twitter and other social media sites that were making much worse allegations (that Lynch was arrested), as well as media requests for the information,” Tyler tells the Reporter in a Thursday email. ” We determined that the right course of action was to release the facts of the allegations, via a news release, to ensure that all media, as well as the public, received the most up to date, factual information at the same time.”

A police news release states a woman reported Lynch was involved in the alleged crime, which did not involve domestic violence nor sexual assault. According to CrimeMapping.com, the alleged aggravated assault was committed on the 11100 block of Northeast Eighth Street.
The investigation was the sole assignment of one Bellevue detective, as of Monday. Police are actively trying to gather information to determine whether the Seahawks player was actually involved. No arrest was made and police state no further information is being made available at this time.
“This case remains a high priority for the Bellevue police department, and we are committed to bringing this investigation to a quick resolution,” Bellevue Police reported in a Tuesday statement. “We have a full time detective working this case, and that detective has made significant progress in investigating these allegations fully and thoroughly.”
