UPDATE: Four police chief finalists announced | Public reception set for Thursday

Finalists

– Chuck Miiller, assistant chief of the Phoenix Police Department: Miiller has been with the Phoenix PD for more than 23 years and heads up the department’s special operations and applied sciences division. Miller is also a veteran of the Marine Corps Reserves, and served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

– Stephen Mylett, chief of police in Southlake, Texas: Mylett served 23 years with the Corpus Christi Police before joining the Southlake PD as chief in 2011. Mylett also spent six years as a security police officer for the Air Force.

– Drew Tracy, former assistant chief for the Montgomery County Police Department in Maryland: Tracy retired from the Montgomery County Police following more than 30 years in law enforcement. He is lead instructor for the State Department’s antiterrorism assistance program. Tracy was operations commander of the 2007 D.C. Sniper case task force.

– Gary Yamashiroya, division commander for the Chicago Police: Yamashiroya is a 28-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department and is division commander for the North area detective division. Yamashiroya spent 1999-2000 as a police advisor to the Office of Civil Affairs during a United Nations mission to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The public reception is part of a two-day interview schedule that will also include meetings with the city council, community members and city staff, according to the news release. City Manager Brad Miyake expects to make a final hiring decision in March.

Miyake passed up on five candidates for the position in November, electing to do a more targeted search using the Police Executive Research Firm. The city paid the Mercer Group more than $21,000 to conduct the first search for a new police chief, following Linda Pillo’s retirement last April.
