Police are investigating the driver in a hit-and-run accident on Jan. 6 in which he allegedly pinned a elderly, mentally disabled man in his care between two cars before forcing him into his car and driving away.
Police responded to the incident around 5 p.m. at a strip mall parking lot located at 225 Bellevue Way NE.
The suspect, a white male between 45 and 50 years of age and around 5-feet 6-inches, reportedly struck the pedestrian while exiting a parking spot. The victim was pinned between the suspect’s blue 1994 Jeep Cherokee and a Mazda 3. After the victim was unpinned, he fell and could not get up or walk on his own.
Witnesses attempted to render aid and converse with the suspect, who reportedly pushed the pedestrian into his car and said something about taking the man to the hospital.
The victim was heard protesting that he did not want to get into the Jeep and the pair did not show up at any local hospitals immeditately after the accident, according to police.
The driver reportedly drove to Northeast 24th Place in the Clyde Hill neighborhood before calling 911 and reporting the accident. He reportedly said that he and the victim had been at a party where the victim fell off of a deck, Bellevue Fire Department spokesperson Ryan Armstrong told the Reporter.
Firefighters responded to the call and transported the victim to Overlake Medical Center with a broken leg, but reported that there did not appear to be anything suspicious.
It was only when one of the responding firefighters saw a news alert hours later with a photo of the suspect’s face that they realized the two cases were connected, according to Armstrong.
The suspect was apprehended by Everett police on Jan. 7.
Once the investigation is complete, the report will be turned over to the King County Prosecutor, who will decide if and what charges to file.
