UPDATE: Lights restored to Bellevue College area after squirrel-related power outage

PSE reports a squirrel caused the outage after contacting equipment in the Bellevue College area substation. Watch for street light outages near the campus and north of Interstate 90.

UPDATE: All power has been restored to the area as of 4:20 p.m.

Original Story: Puget Sound Energy is working to restore power to the neighborhoods around Bellevue College after a squirrel interfered with equipment at the area substation.

About 2,700 customers lost power at 1:30 p.m., according to PSE spokesperson Dorothy Bracken. Crews are working to fix the problem and 55 customers had been restored as of 3:20 p.m., she said.

A tip from commuter Tad Donaghe reported streetlight outages on 148th Avenue Northeast, from Northeast Eighth Street toward I-90. At least one police officer was controlling traffic at an intersection in the area.

The City of Bellevue’s Transportation Department confirmed the intersection outages. City employees are working to activate backup generators, Public Involvement Manager Tresa Berg said.
