Update #2

Bellevue Police are pointing to icy windows and a failure to look right as contributing to a teen driver’s collision with a 77-year-old Seattle woman that killed the pedestrian early Monday morning.

Police Ofc. Seth Tyler said the woman was legally using the crosswalk on 150th Avenue Southeast at Southeast 38th Street around 6 a.m. Monday, when she was struck by an 18-year-old Bellevue man.

Police determined the teen had not adequately defrosted the windows on his vehicle, “and that resulted in him not being able to see outside his window where the pedestrian was crossing,” Tyler said, adding the driver also failed to look right, which meant not seeing the pedestrian in the crosswalk.

A drug recognition expert evaluated the driver and police do not believe drugs or alcohol played a factor in the collision.

Police located Monday afternoon the company that owned a second vehicle, a pickup, which may have also struck the victim. Tyler said another highway traffic camera caught a better image of the vehicle, and police are now talking with the driver.

The investigation remains active, Tyler said, and any potential charges against the teen driver will be decided by the King County Prosecutor’s Office once the case is closed.

Update #1

A 77-year-old Seattle woman died early Monday morning after being struck by a teen driver while attempting to cross 150th Avenue Southeast at Southeast 38th Street.

Bellevue Police Ofc. Seth Tyler said an 18-year-old Bellevue man remained at the scene of the fatal collision with the pedestrian around 6 a.m. Monday, and is cooperating with police. A drug recognition expert evaluated the driver and police do not believe drugs or alcohol played a factor in the collision.

Officers worked through the morning to recreate the scene of the collision, and reopened 150th Avenue Southeast around 11 a.m. Monday. Tyler said police are attempting to determine if the pedestrian had been in the crosswalk at the time she was struck and whether the driver saw her ahead of time.

Police located Monday afternoon the company that owned a second vehicle, a pickup, which may have also struck the victim. Tyler said another highway traffic camera caught a better image of the vehicle, and police are now talking with the driver.

“The vehicle will be towed back to the Bellevue Police Department,” Tyler said Monday. “Our evidence technicians will be taking a look at it.”

“The driver did stick around, however, we believe there is a second vehicle involved who either came close to or did run over her,” Tyler said of an unidentified white pickup, which appears to be a 2012 or newer Ford F-150 with writing on the doors, likely the name of a business. “We’d like to talk to the driver of the vehicle. It’s possible they weren’t even aware of this.”
