Residents who struggle to maintain their homes and yards have somewhere to turn. An army of 400 volunteers will make essential home improvements for people in need on Aug. 15, “A Day of Sharing and Caring,” and they are gathering a list of projects now.

Jubilee Services, a Bellevue nonprofit organization in partnership with the city, is accepting requests for home repair or yard maintenance from Bellevue residents. The volunteers will make improvements to up to 40 homes. Projects include painting, fence repair, deck replacement, light carpentry work and yard and carport cleanup.

A committee representing Jubilee Services will select projects based on need, considering such factors as household income, homeowner disabilities and the condition of the home.

In 2005, a coalition of Eastside churches led by Bellevue First Presbyterian Church began a home repair day for residents in need. The group also helped teachers ready their classrooms for the school year. In 2008, the city became a partner in the event, primarily to help spread the word.

Jubilee Services, which benefits from donations of materials and money, in addition to labor, coordinates skilled volunteers doing home repairs where needed throughout the year. Additionally, the Jubilee Home2Home program provides furniture and household items to households in need.
