Walmart opened a hiring center in Bellevue on Monday for those seeking a job at the company s’ Local Market store at the Kelsey Creek Center in Bellevue. The company also has received hundreds of applicants online. Walmart plans to hire 90 workers for the store.
Angel Davis lives only a few blocks from the Kelsey Creek market. A retail veteran of stores such as Fred Meyer, Bartell’s, Davis applied for a supervisor position. Davis said she pestered construction workers for months in an attempt to find out which stores would fill the vacant Kmart center at Kelsey Creek. Davis has been looking for a job for several months while volunteering for a nonprofit.
“It’s really hard,” she said. “For every job there are at least 50 applicants.”
The hiring center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Applications can be turned in any time between now and June, when the store is projected to open, but store manager Jeremy Winn said more positions will be available to those who apply early.
Theanne Lum, a Bellevue resident, considers herself a long-time “Walmart fan.” Lum works as a Certified Nursing Assistant, but she is looking to pick up some extra work as a cashier or greeter on the weekends. A frequent shopper at the Renton Walmart store, Lum is looking forward to the opening of the location at Kelsey Creek, and a larger general merchandise store in Factoria later this year. She said a growing area like Bellevue needs more shopping options.
“Bellevue is a city now, by itself and we need these kinds of stores to match the population growth and demand,” she said. “We’re no longer just a blueberry farm.”
People interested in positions at the new store can visit the hiring center, located at 15650 NE 24th St., suite A in Bellevue, in person or apply online. Those interested also can apply at kiosks within the Lynnwood and Renton full-service Walmart locations.
