Winter shelters for men and women will open in Bellevue starting Nov. 22, providing a warm overnight option for an estimated 300-500 men and women who sleep outside on the Eastside each night The shelters will remain open through March 15. Both shelters will offer a meal.
The effort is a partnership by Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission, The Sophia Way, Congregations for the Homeless and the cities of Bellevue, Issaquah, Kirkland and Redmond, King County and many local congregations and individuals.
“We want to first ensure the safety and health of all individuals and families in Bellevue and on the Eastside,” said Emily Leslie, Human Services Manager for City of Bellevue. “By providing shelter to homeless individuals and families, we’re offering a lifeline and helping them take a critical step on their journey out of homelessness.”
The Eastside Winter Shelter for Homeless Men will sleep up to 50 men while The Eastside Shelter for Homeless Women and Families with children will sleep up to 15. The hours of operation are 8:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. The men’s shelter will be at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, 17222 NE Eighth St., Bellevue. The women’s and families’ shelter will be at the Salvation Army, 911 164th Ave. NE, Bellevue.
