Craig Groshart | Go with us to the game

Some say there is nothing better than Texas high school football.

Apparently they haven’t seen the Bellevue Wolverines play.

All that will change on September 12 when Bellevue travels to Katy, Texas to take on one of that state’s powerhouse teams. And the Bellevue Reporter plans to be there, too, to bring you the game in all its excitement.

Travel to Texas to cover a high school game, you say?

Well, it’s not just any ol’ game.

Katy was the Texas state champions in 1959, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2007 and 2008. They made it to the semifinals in 1959, 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2008. That’s a pretty good tradition.

Oh, and Katy was ranked number four in the nation last year. And between the years of 2003 and 2007, the Tigers have had a combined total of 70-5 wins.

Ah, but here’s Bellevue.

Last year, the Wolverines put a cap on a perfect season by rolling over Union High School 35-6 in the 3A state championship game. It was Bellevue’s sixth state title in the past eight years.

So you can see what high school sports fans are dubbing this game the

Katy already is off to a good start. In front of 12,000-plus fans on August 29, No. 1 Katy knocked off the No. 2 North Shore Mustangs 9-7, ending the Mustangs’ 78-game regular-season win streak. That speaks of pretty good power.

Of course, Bellevue has a history of knocking off national powerhouses.

In 2003, it ended the 151-winning streak of De La Salle High School from Concord, Calif. The next year Long Beach Poly was the victim.

To say that Wolverines’ coach Butch Goncharoff has his hands on a machine would be an understatement.

So, now it’s Texas.

The game will be at Katy’s stadium, which holds nearly 10,000 people. Two of them will be from Bellevue: sports writer Joel Willits and photographer Chad Coleman.

Our team will fly to Texas two days before the game to begin their coverage of what is being called The Clash of the Champions II. Before they leave, there will be numerous stories and photographs in the Bellevue Reporter to acquaint you with the coaches, players and history of the Wolverines.

Once in Texas, Joel and Chad will write, photograph, Tweet and blog about the events as they unfold.

Bellevue fans can be part of this event, too. The Bellevue Reporter is offering special ads to go along with the stories before and after the game. You can show your support by calling our advertising coordinator at 425-453-4270 and becoming part of what will be the game/event of the year.

Speaking of blogs

The Reporter Newspapers have started a photo blog on its sites for all of you who like great photography and wonder just how did the photographer get the image.

Go to the Bellevue Reporter Web site (www.bellevuereporter.com) and click on the Blogs header. You’ll want Focus Northwest to find photos and discussions about them.
