“Muslims represent Islam as a whole” is a statement that is true of all faith traditions and organized religions in an ideal world.
Humans are not perfect and so proclaiming they are Christians, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Muslims and carrying out heinous acts in the name of their religion do not represent that particular religion. Individuals are responsible for their own actions, words and thoughts and choose to profess that it is their religion they are following. It is important to learn more about the message of Islam from the majority of persons who practice its teachings to live in harmony and peace with their neighbors than focus on the few are misguided.
I would like to invite Aaron J. Hill and other readers to meet our imams of the mosques in Bellevue, Redmond and Kirkland. They have all “denounced” violence in all its forms.
The first opportunity is to attend the “Standing Together for Human Dignity, justice, compassion and wisdom” on April 24 (standingtogether2016.com).
This interfaith study and dialogue program seeks to foster greater understanding, respect and cooperative social action among citizens from different faith traditions.
We are also planning an open house program at the Islamic Center of Bellevue on April 30. You will have a chance to visit the peaceful Muslims who are doing their best to be better humans. You are welcome to ask any questions and meet with our members and imam.
The American way of life as envisioned by our founders of this nation is the essence of the message of Islam. Our basic values are “Love for humanity what you love for yourself” and “Love your neighbor as you love your Creator.” We are all parts of the same human family and support each other with kindness and patience.
