Yes Man” is a new comedy now playing at Lincoln Square Cinemas, starring Jim Carrey who plays Carl Allen, a depressed, divorced loan officer who has been saying “no to life” and has been avoiding all of his friends pleas to go out … anywhere. Carl stumbles into an old friend who tells him about a program called “Yes! Is The New No” and reluctantly agrees to go after missing his best friends engagement party.
At the program, the speaker, Terrence, exposes Carl’s sad life story and makes him promise to say “Yes!” to every opportunity or request that comes his way. This is how he becomes the “Yes Man.”
The morning that my family and I decided to go see this film, I thought of an experiment. I tried to say “YES” all day long. I found being a “Yes Girl” rather hard.
That day I ate a huge salad, even with almonds on top, which I don’t like. I put on gloves and a scarf. I even refrained from playing games on my phone when asked to!
Unfortunately, I failed when my Mom asked me whether I was going to clean my pet rabbits’ cage that day, though it was long overdue. Oh, well!
“Yes Man” was a fun film with lots of big laugh-out-loud moments. The plot of a loan officer always saying “yes” to everything was unique, particularly when he approves every request for a loan! The characters were played perfectly and you got a great sense of their personalities very quickly.
Being a huge Jim Carrey fan, I had big expectations for this film. His performance in “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” is one of my favorites. He is always funny, and I was not surprised to find his lines and expressions were as hilarious as ever.
Zooey Deschanel, playing Allison, Carl’s spontaneous rocker/photographer love interest, was as cute and fun as she was in the movie “Elf” and really shined in this movie.
I was amazed, however, to find that my favorite character in the movie was Carl’s geeky boss, Norman, played by Rhys Darby. He was comedic and hysterical in every scene. I loved his dorky Harry Potter costume party and weird handshake!
Overall, I thought “Yes Man” was a very entertaining film and definitely worth the trip to the theater. It was remarkably amusing and extremely enjoyable to watch.
“Yes Man” might not have the most perfect ending, being a little bit strange, but it was lighthearted and fun. It’s perfect for the family, (just remember, it’s PG-13) and an ideal outing for that family grouch who’s not yet in the Christmas spirit!
As a bonus, after watching the movie, we were just in time to walk out to see Bellevue Square’s SnowFlake Lane. If you catch an early movie showing that ends before seven, you shouldn’t miss this other show near Lincoln Square Cinemas! The drummers are incredible and they all posed for pictures with us. I had never seen the mall glowing so brightly in the changing colored lights. It’s really special this year because there’s real snow covering everything!
