The return of the ‘paper boy’ | Janet Taylor, Publisher

“I delivered newspapers when I was a kid.” I hear this lot during conversations I have with folks in our community. I hear the word ‘paper boy’ and ‘paper route,’ too. Or, ‘it was my first job.’ Well, the Bellevue Reporter is now hiring youth carriers to deliver our newspaper once a week.

“I delivered newspapers when I was a kid.” I hear this lot during conversations I have with folks in our community. I hear the word ‘paper boy’ and ‘paper route,’ too. Or, ‘it was my first job.’

Getting to know people who had paper routes, I have found a few things to be the common thread:

● Statements regarding delivering newspapers are said with pride and a big smile.

● Many times, the delivery involved a bike.

● The majority of those who had a paper route are successful in their lives today.

So what happened to the ‘paper boy?’ Consumers wanted their newspapers delivered in the morning, not the afternoon. Early morning delivery made it difficult for youth carriers because it is dark in the morning for half the year and kids need to be in school first thing.

Many of our readers have requested porch delivery. We feel giving youth an opportunity to make a little money is a good idea. We believe kids will take pride delivering newspapers in their own neighborhoods.

It is for these reasons that the Bellevue Reporter is now hiring youth carriers to deliver our newspaper once a week. We have been working hard breaking down walking routes in Bellevue, Medina and Clyde Hill. About 60 percent of the households in Bellevue will be porch delivered this summer. That’s right, many of you will have your newspaper delivered at your front door.

Some of our routes cannot be delivered by youth carriers because of high traffic streets, gated communities and isolated locations. That’s why only 60 percent will be porch delivered.

We are hiring kids to deliver the Bellevue Reporter in their neighborhoods. Kids over the age of 12 can earn extra money delivering our paper one day a week. Give our circulation department a call if you are interested in finding out if your neighborhood is available.

Responsibility and earning a little money has been the foundation of success from many of you reading this today. If you have kids, if you are a kid or if you know of a kid that would jump at this opportunity, call us at 425-241-8538.
