You’d think that if you told someone over and over and over again, they would get the message. Apparently not the Legislature.
Three times voters have approved a measure to require a 2/3 majority vote in order to raise taxes. Three times the Legislature has overturned the measure after two years and continued on its tax-and-spend ways.
Once more voters must protect their pocketbooks – this time by voting ‘Yes’ on I-1053.
Maybe this time legislators will understand that it’s no longer business as usual, thanks to an ongoing and debilitating recession. Maybe this time they’ll understand that taxpayers want government to clean up its act by setting priorities on government functions and then paying for those with money at hand and not what they can get by raising taxes.
We know what you’re saying: Maybe pigs will fly.
Nonetheless, voters must send the message again.
Interestingly, the state did not collapse during those periods when the 2/3 requirement was in effect. State services were delivered, people were helped, bills got paid.
The problem is that a majority in the Legislature always wants more money for more program, regardless if the voters can’t pay for it. The desire seems insatiable.
Enough. The state doesn’t need more money to pay for essential services. Instead, legislators need to set priorities.
You can help make that happen by voting ‘Yes’ on I-1053.
