It’s that time of year again. Festival season.

In the last month, the lineups for nearly every major summer music festival has been released. And now it’s decision time.

Coachella. Sasquatch! Primavera. Governor’s Ball. Bonnaroo. Firefly. Pickathon.

What festival am I going to spend my money on?

For the past two years, I went with what most music heads would call the “obvious choice”: Coachella. It’s the biggest, most varied lineup of the bunch (historically), and it helped that I had an aunt and uncle that lived right outside of the polo grounds (NOTE: showers and beds instead of camping? Yes please). Also, it’s pretty much guaranteed to be hot.

But this year I am looking for something new.

For the most part, the bulk of the lineups are comparable. Insert hot pop act, insert weird indie thing, insert hip hop game changer. Then there are the headliners. That’s where Coachella is lacking this year; for some reason, it just seems they missed the mark.

This year, festival headliners include Phoenix (new album dropping soon), Mumford and Sons (Duh. They just won a Grammy) and the Red Hot Chili Peppers (safe, solid option).

Totally awesome – but completely predictable.

That’s why I’m flying the coop and checking out the Governor’s Ball festival in New York. Why? Because every single headliner for that fest has been pretty much MIA in the last year (Kanye West, Kings of Leon and Guns and Roses) – and that’s bound to provide for some excitement.

Being the music brat I am, I understand not everyone can fly across the country to go hear a couple bands. That’s why us Washingtonians are super lucky. We have one of the best musical festivals, with one of the best lineups – in our own backyard. The Sasquatch! Music Festival at the Gorge in George. Sure, it’s a bit of a drive, but with headliners including locals Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and The Postal Service – in addition to a bunch of other awesome acts – it’s one you don’t want to miss.

Oh, and Mumford will be there too.
