130 miles in 24 hours? That’s next for Blaine Lints

Blaine Lints is moving again.

It’s hard to put a stop to the Newport junior, an endurance athlete who has completely immersed himself in the sport.

Now he’s using his talents for a great cause.

Lints hopes to run for 24 hours straight during the University of Washington’s Relay for Life on May 22 and 23 – raising money for each mile he runs, which he hopes will reach 130.

Yep, Lints hopes to run over five marathons. In one day.

“I was looking for a big event this year to kind of really bump up what I’ve been doing, something that would really challenge me,” Lints said. “When I say this I realized it would be a good event to push myself and to help other people.”

Lints will attempt to raise money for the American Cancer Society through outside donations and sponsors. The organization’s goals hit home to Lints, who has had eight relatives die from cancer, including his grandmother.

“The thought has gone through my head that I could get cancer, or my parents could get cancer, and that made me want to make as much of a difference as I could,” Lints said. “So when I saw this, it was perfect.”

Lints, who began diving into long-distance sports in 2008, has run several ultra-endurance events, but admits that the 130-mile goal will be his loftiest event. If he completes his goal, he’ll likely even break a few world records along his journey around the UW track.

“Mentally, I know there’s no way I could give up,” he said. “If I think I’m going to do something, there’s never any quitting or even a thought of it. It doesn’t exist for me.”
