A brick wall between the posts

Beyond the Athlete: Vikings' goalie David Postma has surrendered just four goals in 15 games this season

With everything on the line, Bellevue Christian Vikings goalie David Postma came through in the clutch against the Klahowya Eagles in the Class 1A District III championship game.

Postma made a plethora of saves through the duration of the game, including a diving deflection to the lower left side after Klahowya uncorked a shot on goal from five yards out with five minutes left in regulation, preserving Bellevue Christian’s 1-0 win against Klahowya in a winner-to-state game on May 14 in Orting. Bellevue Christian took a 1-0 lead when Bennett Close’s line drive shot from 30 yards out found the upper right side of the back of the net in the 70th minute of play.

“We scored with 10 minutes to go. I knew those last 10 minutes were going to be the longest minutes of the game, that is for sure,” Postma said. “We had the lead and they were going to come after it. We just kept doing what we were doing and that is what paid off for us.”

Postma has allowed a mere four goals in 15 games this season. The Vikings have compiled an overall record of 14-0-1. Bellevue Christian defender Dylan Parsons said Postma’s instincts between the posts are off the charts.

“DP (David Postma) is the man. He just knows where the ball is 10 minutes before it’s even kicked. He is like a robot,” Parsons said. “His magic glove just extends and he will stop anything that comes his way. It’s definitely comforting for our team seeing David Postma back there.”

Close concurred with Parsons’ sentiment.

“David is a great goalie. He gets down to the ground so fast and just gets his hands on everything,” Close said.  Recently the Bellevue Reporter had an opportunity to ask Postma a few questions about his life away from the soccer field.

Bellevue Reporter: What is your favorite movie of all time?

David Postma: I’m going to go with three. I love “Rudy,” “Miracle” and “Hoosiers.”

BR: Where is your favorite place to eat in Bellevue?

DP: Chipotle Mexican Grill. It has good food.

BR: What is your dream vacation spot?

DP: I like Alaska. The scenery is really nice out there.

BR: Who is your pick to win the NBA Finals?

DP: Since we have nobody to root for, I just like watching good players. I like watching Golden State and Cleveland, for sure, but I don’t want to sound like a bandwagon fan.

BR: Who is your idol?

DP: I love watching Russell Wilson. He is fun to watch.

BR: If you could pick one person to go to dinner with, who would it be?

DP: It depends on the day, but a family dinner is always lots of fun.

BR: What is something unique about you that nobody would know?

DP: Most people don’t know that I’m into music. I play the trombone.

BR: How many text messages do you send per day?

DP: I don’t have a lot of time. I’m not really sure the number, but maybe between 10 to 15.
