A thrilling weekend on the track culminated in both area champions repeating, and the Bellevue Christian girls capturing the 1A state team title.
Both Robert Hintz of Bellevue and Jasmine Cho of Newport successfully defended their titles in dominating fashion this weekend at the 2A/3A/4A state championship meet, held at Mount Tahoma High School.
Hintz broke both the 3A state meet and Bellevue school records with a toss of 211 feet in the boys javelin, as he edged Yelm’s Jesse Elvrom by 20 feet to repeat as the 3A state champion. Hintz threw 192-6 to take the title last year.
Hintz’s big toss topped the meet record of 202-10 set by Jason Harris of Renton in 2006.
Harvard-bound Cho ran a 56.56 400 meter dash to earn her second state title in as many years in the event, beating out Woodinville’s McKenzie Luth, who finished in 57.19.
The BCS girls, bolstered by senior Terra Oldham’s 300 meter hurdles title, raced out to capture the 1A team championship with 56 points. Chewelah finished in second place with 49 points in the meet, which was held at Eastern Washington University.
The Vikings boys 4×100 relay team of Kent Schmuland, Kyle Fremd, Aaron Iseman and Ryan Neal set a new school record and took first in the event with a time of 43.66.
