Bellevue defensive backs coach Danny Razore has accepted a position with the University of Washington football staff and will begin duties with the Huskies on Tuesday.

The 2008 Wolverine alum played at the University of San Diego before injuries prematurely ended his time as a player and began his coaching career on staff at Bellevue.

After following the career of newly hired Washington defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox since his time at Boise State, Razore was hoping to find a way to get on staff before the 2013 season, when his undergraduate coursework at the UW would be finished at he could apply for a Graduate Assistant position.

But as Wilcox, cohort Peter Sirmon and Sarkisian cleaned house on the defensive side of the ball, the opportunity presented itself earlier than planned and was buoyed by Bellevue head football coach Butch Goncharoff, who acted as a liaison with Sarkisian and Wilcox.

“It’s been a whirlwind the past couple weeks,” Razore said. “Butch is amazing.”

Razore’s role on coach Steve Sarkisian’s staff will be similar to that of Marques Tuiasosopo, the last undergraduate assistant on staff, and will include reviewing film of recruits.

“I’ll sharpen pencils,” he said. “I’ll do whatever they want me to do.”

Players learned of the news Saturday morning at a weightlifting session and while there was a mix of emotions, everyone understood the opportunity was far too good to pass up.

“Telling the kids was extremely tough,” Razore said. “I love our kids so much and that goes both ways. That’s my family. They were understanding and excited.”
