One week into the 2013 prep football season, and the Bellevue machine is already in full force.

The Wolverines dispatched two-time defending 4A state champion Skyline 45-7 in the finale of the Emerald City Kickoff Classic at Husky Stadium, handling the Spartans in a way no team has during the past decade, taking a 35-0 lead into the half and cruising to the win.

“We had a lot of young guys playing tonight,” Bellevue head coach Butch Goncharoff said, a nod to the 17 new starters his squad broke in tonight. “It was fun, the kids played hard.”

Budda Baker got the scoring going in the first quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run, and added another later from 47 yards out.

“I thought he was pretty good,” Goncharoff said of his senior superstar, who put on his latest display in front of University of Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian and a host of Husky players including many from Bellevue. “He is a tremendous player and an even better kid.”

Sam Richmond and Marek Spooner-Leduff each added scores and the Bellevue defense looked as though it was going to pitch a shutout until Skyline quarterback Kilton Anderson ran in a score late in the game.

The Wolverines allowed the Naples, Fla. transfer to complete only 11 of 24 passes on the night and also took away a pair of fumbles from the Spartans in the win.

Bellevue faces Bothell next week.

Newport picked up a win on the road in Olympia, beating Capital 35-7 to open the season.

Sammamish fell 25-20 to Cedarcrest in Duvall and Interlake was downed 44-3 by visiting Issaquah.
