Brent Hermanson, an assistant coach last season with the Bulldogs, was named BCC women’s head coach on May 29.
Hermanson replaces Steve Lowe, who stepped down to pursue a coaching opportunity at NCAA Division II Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma.
Lowe, who led the Bulldogs to a 18-13 finish last season, and helped BCC qualify for the NWAACC tournament for the third year in a row.
Last season was also Hermanson’s first as an assistant with the program and first in the college ranks.
He had been active in girls youth basketball for the last 10 years, working with both the Redmond Select and Flight AAU basketball programs.
“I’m extremely excited for the opportunity to coach at Bellevue Community College,” Hermanson said. “I believe we will compete again this year to win the Northern Region and return to the NWAACC Tournament.”
Hermanson also announced two changes to the coaching staff in his first act as the new head man.
Paulette Martin, an assistant last year, has been named as associate head coach, while Dan Toblin has been promoted from strength and conditioning coach to assistant coach.
Bulldogs mens basketball signs eight for next season
Bellevue Community College announced Tuesday, June 3, the signing of eight players for the 2008-09 men’s basketball team, including two former Issaquah High School standouts.
The Bulldogs inked Eagles Bren Hobzek and Matt Lapasin, who scored 16.3 and 15.5 points per game respectively to lead Issaquah in scoring last season.
“Bren and Matt have played together for a long time, and it shows when they step on to the court,” said BCC head coach Jeremy Eggers. “It is always a priority to try to keep local talent at home, and that’s exactly what we’ve been able to do in signing Bren and Matt.”
BCC also nabbed 6-foot-6 forward Rahiti Marere, a transfer from the Evergreen State College in Olympia.
RJ Perkins, who signed with BCC in 2007 but sat out due to personal reasons, re-signed with the Bulldogs. BCC also inked perimeter players Jordan Starr of Davis High School in Yakima, and Brad Valentine from Kentlake High School in Kent.
BCC gains size up front with the signing of 6-foot-7 Sean Day of Skyline High School. Day helped the Spartans earn a trip to the Sea-King District District Tournament this season.
“Sean has tremendous upside and we are really looking forward to watching him grow over the next two years,” Eggers said. “He has some outstanding athletic gifts and runs the floor as well as any big guy in our league.”
Rounding out the Bulldogs class was 6’9’’ post Ryan Blake, who led Ilwaco (Wash.) High School to a second-place finish in the SW 1A Trico League with 15.3 points per game.
“It we can blend our new talent and our returning experience, I think we stand a chance of having yet another outstanding season in 2008-2009,” Eggers said.
