Bellevue goes 2-0 at city wrestling meet | Prep Wrestling

With 19 of Bellevue’s 26 wrestlers being freshmen and sophomores, the Wolverine grapplers have had to learn quickly this season.

With the regular season coming to a close Thursday night at Interlake with all four city teams in action, it was evident the youngsters were growing up quickly.

The Wolverines went 2-0 at the meet, beating up Sammamish and surviving Interlake to finish the regular season 8-3.

“This year’s team is pretty young with only six upperclassman – they’re trying to learn the expectations,” said Bellevue coach Tom Ovens. “But they’re picking it up and they’re getting better.”

Matt Casimes, Carter Steinhoff and Erik Ovens all went 2-0 with two pins for Bellevue. Casimes pinned his first opponent, Interlake’s Marcus Kopp, in just 15 seconds.

Also going 2-0 for the Wolverines on the night (decisions and forfeits) were Jun Park, Colin Small, Will Fields, Jimmy Trull and Jin Park.

“We should have a couple guys seeded in the top spots in KingCo’s,” Ovens said, referencing the league tournament, which takes place next Friday and Saturday at Liberty High School.

Interlake would rebound to beat Newport 51-21, but Saints coach Dave Unwin was disappointed to come up short against the Wolverines.

Christian Schultz’s pin of Brandon Saperia in the 145-pound weight class put Interlake behind just 33-29 with two matches left, but Erik Ovens’ pin of Jacob Marks put the Wolverines up by ten in the next match. Bobby Mueller finished the night up in the 160-pound class by pinning Bellevue’s Sam Bassford in 54 seconds.

“Losing to Bellevue hurts,” Unwin said. “I really thought we had a chance to beat them. All of their guys are in good shape and all our guys weren’t, and that was the difference.”

Schultz (145) finished up a strong league year for Interlake, going 2-0 with pins over Saperia and Newport’s Carl Sangalang. Schultz finishes his final regular season for Interlake with 17 pins. He pinned all of his opponents in regular dual matches and had five others in tournaments.

“We have some guys with opportunities to place in state,” Unwin said. “It’s a big jump when you get to Tacoma though. But I think we have guys with a chance to do it.”

Feyman Liang went 2-0 for the Saints, pinning Bellevue’s Peter Ovens and defeating Newport’s Winston Chen 9-7 in overtime.

Val Vautier went 2-0 with two pins for Sammamish. Newport’s Matt Draker went 2-0, pinning Sammamish’s Shawn Sandhu and Interlake’s Nigel Miles. Teammate Shawn Weisenburgh went 2-0 with a pin and a technical fall.

“KingCo has shown a lot of improvement,” Unwin said. “Everyone’s getting better.”
