Bellevue Thunderbird will send its 9/10 year old All-Star team to the state baseball tournament, after the squad captured the District 9 tournament title recently at Hartman Park in Redmond with a 10-0 over crosstown rival Bellevue West.
Thunderbird beat Snoqualmie Valley 19-0 to start its tournament, and came back to win an 8-5 game over Mercer Island in the second round.
Another win, 12-9 over Issaquah, set the first of three meetings between Thunderbird and Bellevue West in the semifinals.
Bellevue West won the first game 8-1 to move one win from a district title, and send Thunderbird to the loser’s bracket.
But a 12-3 win over Redmond North gave Thunderbird another shot, and a 14-1 win in the rematch set Tuesday’s winner-take-all final.
Thunderbird will be among 13 teams vying for a state championship at Stan Hedwall Park in Chehalis, and opens the tournament July 19 at 1:45 p.m. against a team from Kent.
Bellevue West plays a loser-out game in the Majors tournament July 3. Bellevue East faces the same prospect in the 10/11 tournament against Redmond North at 6 p.m.
