Bellevue water polo teams earn top finishes

The Castaway Polo Athletes Water Polo Club, comprised of nine athletes from Issaquah and Sammamish high schools, took second place at the 2010 Washington State High School Water Polo tournament two weeks ago.

The Castaway club got off to a fast start in the tournament, shutting out Bellevue (19-0) and Bainbridge Island (15-0), before allowing their first goal in an 11-1 victory over Newport in the semifinals.

Castaway lost to the Islanders 8-5. CPA was led by Nick Glidden, who scored three goals and had an assist, and juniors Aaron Cheng and Matt McKaig, who each scored a goal.

Newport finished third by defeating Roosevelt and Bellevue finished in fifth place.

Glidden, Garrett Davidson and goalie Adam Florscheim were named to the All-Tournament first team, along with Newport’s Lee Griffen, who scored five goals in the Knights win over Roosevelt.

Newport’s Owen Bell and Grant Schoenlein earned second team honors, while Erik Jensen and goalie Mack Berry were named to the third team. Newport coach Calvin White was named coach of the year.
