The junior for the Wolverines made it two straight state titles at the Mat Classic state wrestling championships.

Bellevue’s Christian Villani made it back-to-back state titles at Saturday’s finals in the 3A Mat Classic, earning a 17-0 technical fall win over Peninsula junior Zach Goddard in the championship match at 145 pounds.

Villani, who became the first state champion for the Wolverines in more than three decades last year, won his first match by fall at the 2:53 mark over Shadle Park senior Grover Escobar in Friday’s morning session. He came back to win a 6-5 match in the quarterfinals, getting past Bonney Lake senior Caid Caveness to reach the semi-finals.

Saturday’s matches were not nearly as close, as Villani won 17-1 over Lakes junior Tino Nieves in the semis before taking care of Goddard to capture his second straight state title.

Villani took only a single loss on the year, an injury defeat in his Regional finals, and finished 28-1 while becoming the program’s first repeat champion.

Alec Palander, also a junior, finished fourth at 220 pounds in Class 3A.

A linebacker for the six-time defending state football champions, Palander beat Antonio Corea of Auburn Mountainview 5-2 in the first round before getting a pin over Marcus Surita of Southridge in the quarterfinals.

Mount Spokane senior Tom Harvey pinned Palander in the semi-finals, before he lost a 7-2 match to Dallas Goodpaster in the third place match to end his year as the fourth place wrestler in the state.

Bellevue finished 12th in the team scoring in Class 3A.

Sammamish’s Rathtana Duong lost both of his matches at 126 pounds in the Class 2A bracket for the Totems.

Bellevue Christian senior Tate Razor won one match at the 1A Mat Classic, taking a consolation bracket match by fall over Tim Jarrard of Lakeside. Razor lost his first match and another, 3-2 in the consolation bracket to end his tournament at 220 pounds.
