The Mercer Island Islanders lacrosse team’s winning streak came to a screeching halt against the Bellevue Wolverines.
Bellevue registered a 13-9 win against Mercer Island (17-1) in front of a packed house at Bellevue High School on May 4. Bellevue head coach John Baumann was jovial after witnessing his team topple its fiercest rival in front of the hometown fans on Wolverine Way.
“I’m happy for my guys and I’m happy we got to do it here at home,” Baumann said. “It is the rivalry game which is a big deal and anything can happen. We seem to be playing better ball here in May and that is what we preach. That is a really good team (Mercer Island) over there. I would not be surprised if we saw them again at some point in the postseason.”
Bellevue outscored Mercer Island 10-6 in the final three quarters of play. The game was tied at 3-3 after the first 12 minutes of action. The Wolverines held Mercer Island standout Evan Condon to just four goals. Condon, who has committed to the NCAA Division-1 U.S. Military Academy in New York, is a threat to score any time he gains possession of the ball.
“He’s extremely athletic. We really can’t stop him; we can only contain him,” Baumann said of Condon. “We did our best. The key today was that we put the ball in the net. If it would had been a 5-4 or 6-5 game, we could had been in trouble.”
Bellevue’s Matt Marino and Augustus Fratt scored a team-high three goals apiece in the win. Cameron McMahon and Christopher Callison added two goals apiece. Cole Bouwman, Joseph Bethke and Justin Angelel each scored a goal to round out the scoring parade. Marino, who is making a sizable impact as a freshman, said his team knew how important this game was.
“It feels great. You only get a limited amount of times to do something like this,” Marino said. “It gives us a lot of confidence and momentum going into the rest of the season.”
