Bellevue College men’s basketball head coach Jeremy Eggers sat comfortably in his office busily taking care of administrative duties during the final day of the Bellevue College youth basketball camp on the final day of June 30.
Eggers, who has been the head coach of the Bulldogs men’s basketball team for the past 14 years, put assistant coach Marcus Tibbs in charge of the day-to-day operations of the annual camp. Tibbs, who will be in his second season as an assistant during the 2016-2017 season, played for the Bulldogs during his collegiate career and thoroughly enjoyed learning under the tutelage of Eggers.
“I loved playing for Jeremy,” Tibbs said of his time on the hardwood at Bellevue College.
The Decatur 2009 graduate said he’s enjoyed helping out at the camps the past few years but was excited to be in charge of the 2016 four-day camp.
“It’s been a lot of fun. The kids are really into it. I have always wanted to run my own camp. Seeing them all have fun makes it all worth it,” Tibbs said. “The kids make this camp what it is. They are having fun.”
The sound of basketballs bouncing and voices of spirited hoopsters reverberated throughout the gymnasium during the final hour of camp on June 30. A large conglomerate of 30 players competed in 5-on-5 scrimmages on two courts simultaneously while Tibbs shouted words of encouragement from the sidelines.
Tibbs said the camp focused on fundamentals, defensive stations, passing, shooting and dribbling the previous three days.
“Today is kind of the fun day where they get after it and play 5-on-5. We want to make it real fun for them. They are all really loud and are going crazy right now,” Tibbs said with a smile. “I really enjoy coaching and making kids better basketball players. Just being able to give back and help kids has been a dream of mine.”
