The Golf Club at Newcastle has appointed Scott Phelps, a 26-year industry professional, as Golf Course Superintendent for the property’s two award-winning 18-hole courses, Coal Creek and China Creek, the company announced on Monday, Dec. 15.
Phelps most recently served as Director of Grounds at Teton Valley Golf Associates in Victor, Idaho, overseeing an 18-hole Hale Irwin-designed private golf club (Teton Reserve Golf Club), a Dave Druzisky-designed 18-hole public course (The Links), and the Teton Reserve Resort Community Homeowners Association.
“We’re delighted to have Scott’s experience and his energy on our team as we continue improving our golf facility,” said Todd Waltmire, PGA, Director of Golf for the Golf Club at Newcastle.
“Scott has managed and enhanced the playability of some of the most respected golf courses in the country, and we look forward to tapping into his talent for Newcastle.”
Prior to working in Idaho, Phelps spent seven years as Senior Golf Course Superintendent at Arrowhead Golf Club in Littleton, Colo., a high-end 18-hole daily fee facility where he implemented and maintained major golf course improvements, from new bunkers to renovating all 18 tees and improving the overall facility.
During this time, Phelps also served as the American Golf Training Coach, teaching the Denver region’s assistant golf course superintendent development program.
Phelps, a certified Golf Course Superintendent by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, earned his Bachelor of Science in landscape horticulture with a concentration in turf grass management from Colorado State University.
He has also completed additional associate studies in wildlife management.
