Honkers raise almost $1,400 for cancer care
When Martin and Jocelyn Lawrence began researching fundraisers for the Northwest Honkers baseball club, they knew they wanted to do something more than help pay for uniforms and field use fees.
So they started “Honkin’ for a Cure”.
The club, which completed its season recently, raised nearly $1,400 for cancer care by selling bracelets and t-shirts at games, with a portion of the proceeds going to Northwest Hope and Healing.
“A lot of people on the team had been impacted by breast cancer, including myself and my husband,” Jocelyn said. “We felt that was the best route for this year.”
She added that 90 percent of the funds given to Northwest Hope and Healing finds its way to cancer patients and their families who are in need or distressed by the medical costs. The money can be used to defray the cost of bills or other costs that cannot be paid because of treatment for the disease.
While the Honkers themselves are a modest operation, there was no doubt for that finding a way to do something positive in the community was a top priority.
“We’re a low-budget team,” Jocelyn said. “They are also a low-budget organization so to be able to work for them was a great feeling.”
