Interlake boys golf team still unbeaten headed to Medalist tournament | Prep sports news

The Saints, winners of three straight team state championships, look poised for another deep postseason run.

The rest of the KingCo conference has to be tiring of the Interlake Saints boys golf team.

Coach Scott Marcum’s squad has won a state championship in each of the past three season, capturing 2A titles in 2011 and 2012 and winning the 3A crown last spring in Class 3A.

This fall, it has been more of the same.

Interlake capped another perfect season Monday at its home course of Tam O’Shanter, running its match win streak to 26 in the process.

The closest match the team played this year was a seven-stroke win over Mount Si early in the year and the Saints have broken 200 as a team in each match this year.

While the play of stalwarts Andy Liu, Grant Cole and Sam Fisher has again been stellar, Marcum said it is the development of a handful of other players that has kept his team at the top of the conference in 2013.

“The way to go undefeated and win a KingCo championship is to have depth,” he said. “Almost every team has a number one and number two. But when you get to the third, fourth, fifth scores, that is where you really separate yourself.”

Liu, a senior, was the highest individual finisher for Interlake at state last year in a tie for sixth, has shot 40 or better in each match this year, including a season-low 35 three times.

Cole and Fisher, both juniors along with senior Collin Joy, have helped anchor the squad and each of the four owns has multiple sub-40 rounds on the year already.

“Collin Joy has really stepped up this year,” Marcum said, noting his second team All-KingCo honors and a medalist finish at a match this season.

Interlake will be at Snohomish Golf Course Oct. 21 for the KingCo Medalist tournament, with spots in the following week’s SeaKing District tournament on the line.

“I’m just trying to appreciate what this group has done while they are here,” Marcum said. “It has been so special to say we are KingCo, district and state champions wearing the Interlake uniform.”
