Boys tennis

Bellevue dominated its match against Sammamish, sweeping every set in both singles and doubles action behind number one singles and 2010 state participant Zach Kosanke, who took his match with Ethan Romney 6-0, 6-2. Chris Graham and Alex Zhu won the number one doubles match over Connor Cio and Neema Rostami.

Interlake swept the four singles matches from Juanita and only the number one doubles duo of Ethan Ludlam and Devin Chambers picked up a win for the Rebels. The Saints then upstaged that performance in a 7-0 win over Redmond.

Girls soccer

The Saints opened conference play in girls soccer as well, earning a 3-0 win over Bellevue. Coach Kirk Tavener described the game as incredibly physical and sophomore Emma Bergstrom broke open the scoring with a goal in the 32nd minute from senior Isabel Farrell. Emma Ostlund scored the Saints’ second goal, also from Farrell, in the 67th minute and Farrell netted a goal of her own from Rachel Brous to cap off the win.

“The girls played great tonight,” Tavener said. “This is going to be a fun year.”

Interlake moves to 3-0 with the win after defeating Granite Falls and Sultan to start the season.

Volleyball

Bellevue Christian fell in its first Emerald City League volleyball match of the season, 3-0 (30-28, 25-20, 25-21) to Overlake School. Kellie Hartford had a team high 12 kills and Katie Hoffman had 21 assists in the loss.

Bellevue fell to Skyline (11-25, 15-25, 12-25) and Juanita (20-25, 25-20, 20-25, 22-25) and is now 1-2 on the season. Jessie Marvin had seven digs to go along with one kill and two blocks and Memie Huang added three digs against the Spartans. Huang had eight digs, two kills and three aces in the match against the Rebels and Marvin checked in with 19 kills, four digs and a pair of aces.

Interlake’s volleyball team was also dropped, 3-0 (16-25, 18-25, 23-25) by Mercer Island for its first loss of the season. Alyssa Deardorff had four aces and six kills, Jackie Brandt had a team high 15 assists and Lauren Davis had 12 digs in the loss. The Saints fall to 2-1 on the year and will face Evergreen (Seattle) on Saturday before returning to conference play with the first of two Crossroads Cup matches against Sammamish on Monday.

Cross Country

Newport’s boys cross country team picked up an early season at Kelsey Creek on Wednesday, besting Roosevelt and Inglemoor with a meet-best score of 30. Grant Stein and Chris Chamberland were second and third respectively for the Knights. The girls team was led by Michelle Altizer, who ran a 21:21 on the 3.1 mile course and finished in second place in the team scoring.

Bellevue swept the boys and girls races in its meet with Mount Si, also at Kelsey Creek. John Fowler, Addison Woolsey, Ryan Kong, Spike Sievert and Nick MacLean led the Wolverines to their team score of 15 on the boys side while Julia Ellings, Vandan Kasar and Alexis Neuman led the girls side to 18 team points and a win.

Bellevue Christian was at Lower Woodland on Wednesday and the boys came away with a fifth place finish in the Emerald City League meet. The Vikings’ Daniel Nortz ran the fastest time of the day at 16:48.65.

Bellevue alum and former professional baseball player Ben Johnson is holding a camp for youth catchers in the area Oct. 8-9. Johnson will be joined by Seattle University head baseball coach Donny Harrel and former MLB catcher Bill Haselman. The camp will focus on everything from mechanics of throwing and blocking to game management and pitcher-catcher communication. The camp is being held at 2035 120th Ave. NE in Bellevue and cost is $150 for five total hours of instruction (ages 14 and up).
