Hoop for a cause

Four Interlake High School students are hosting a basketball shooting event March 28 to raise money for Right to Play International, which serves children in South America, Africa and Asia to promote health, education and equality through play.

The project is part of the International Baccalaureate program, and will include small team games and a tournament-style format.

Bellevue’s Haehl honored by National Football Foundation

Tim Haehl, a quarterback and defensive back on Bellevue’s 3A state title winning football team, was honored by the National Football Foundation as the Seattle Chapter’s Scholar Athlete, receiving a $2,000 scholarship and distinction as for his academic accomplishments, community involvement and football abilities.

Haehl was chosen along with Andrew Wallen of Auburn Riverside to receive the honor as a back in the first ever tie for the honor, with a lineman also chosen. One of Bellevue’s leaders on the gridiron, Haehl also played for the Wolverines’ basketball team, which claimed a third place finish at the 3A state tournament.

The pool of eight semifinalists was dwindled from 96 nominees.

Newport’s Nolan Anderson was also a finalist for the honor.
