Interlake takes Suncadia, again | Prep sports news

Interlake won its third consecutive title at the Suncadia Invitational and hopes it can again be a precursor to a state title.

The Interlake boys are after a third-straight state title on the golf course and the 2013 group continued what has become somewhat of a postseason tradition for the squad, winning the program’s third straight Suncadia Invitational.

The 23-team field included schools from across the state in all classifications, but coach Scott Marcum’s Saints were the only ones to post a sub-300 team score, winning by nine strokes over 4A KingCo foe Richland, which finished in second place with a score of 308.

Patrick Sato paced the Saints at Suncadia, shooting a 33-36-69, only one stroke off medalist honors for the tournament.

Grant Cole finished with a 39-34-73 for Interlake in the win, which the last two years has also propelled the program to a state title first in Class 2A, and then as a member of 3A in 2012.

The Saints had a pair of interesting ties to other schools competing in the tournament, as Issaquah’s boys golf coach Doug Calvert is also the coach of the Interlake girls team that has postseason aspirations behind junior Aleana Groenhout. The Eagles finished in a tie for third with Woodinville.

His counterpart at Suncadia and co-worker at Interlake, Marcum, is a Richland graduate and had an opportunity to coach against both his former prep coach for the Bombers and also a cousin who is a current member of the team.
