Newport is into the loser's bracket of the 4A KingCo baseball tournament after falling to Redmond 9-1.

Baseball

Newport 9 Redmond 1

The Mustangs plated five runs in the first inning and held Newport to only a single hit in a 9-1 win in the 4A KingCo tournament semi-finals last night, earning a state tournament berth in the process.

The win was the 14th win in the last 15 games and also sends Redmond to the tournament title game on Friday, where Issaquah will be waiting.

Peter Hendron picked up the win on the mound, allowing only a solo home run in the third inning to keep his team in front throughout after the first inning outburst.

A win on Friday will give the Mustangs the top seed from the district. Issaquah and Redmond split a pair of games this year with Issaquah taking the most recent 3-1 on April 27.

3A KingCo, 2A District III tournaments begin tonight

Interlake will also open postseason play tonight and will meet Foster in a 4 p.m. game for the right to play Port Angeles. Four of the 12 teams in the double-elimination tournament will earn 2A state tournamen berths.

Kubej headed to PLU

Newport senior football and soccer player Nathan Kubej, an All-KingCo selection in both sports, will continue his education and career at Pacific Lutheran University, where he will play football for the Lutes.
