A strong fourth quarter sealed a victory for the Newport Knights girls basketball team against the Mount Si Wildcats in a KingCo 4A matchup.
The Knights outscored the Wildcats 18-11 in the final eight minutes of regulation, earning a 48-38 win against the Wildcats on Dec. 19 at Newport High School in Factoria. The Knights improved their overall record to 3-3 with the win. Mount Si dropped to 2-4. Newport sophomore guard Nicole Chan scored nine points in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Chan hit one 3-pointer and sunk six free throws.
“She is certainly one of our best shooters. I was proud of her. She was much more aggressive tonight and I think she needed to be for us to get a win. It was great to see,” Newport head coach Travis Whitaker said of Chan.
Whitaker was pleased his team surrendered just 38 points against the Wildcats.
“I was proud of our defense. I thought we really executed on that end of the floor well. They just really worked well together. It was nice to see,” he said. “We’re a young team and we’re getting better. We’ve competed with some of the better (KingCo) teams and we just haven’t been able to finish. I have been really happy with their fight and think good things are going to come to us.”
The Knights will host Inglemoor in a Class 4A KingCo contest at 7:15 p.m. on Jan. 4 at Newport High School in Factoria.
