Lakeside 17s take District Tournament, headed to State

The Lakeside Recovery 17U AA Legion baseball club is headed to the State Tournament after defeating three consecutive opponents to win the district title.

The Lakeside Recovery AA Legion baseball team completed a dominant three days at the District Tournament with a 6-3 win over the Renton Cannons to take the tournament title on Thursday at Bannerwood Park.

After erasing an early deficit and cruising to a 15-5 win over Bellevue Legion in the opener, Lakeside survived a scare from Woodinville, 4-3 to move into the tournament finale.

In Thursday’s championship, Lakeside used a stellar performance from starting pitcher Jake Rosen to defeat the Cannons for the fifth time this season. Rosen went six innings, striking out five and allowing only a single run on two base hits.

“Rosen did a great job today,” Lakeside manager Mark Thorpe said. “He was ready to go.”

The starting pitcher for Lakeside also knocked in a run and scored a run while having a 2-3 day at the plate.

Lakeside wasted little time in support of its starter, scoring five runs in the first inning to take control of the game.

The next task for Lakeside is the AA Legion State Tournament, which begins on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in Spokane with a game against Mead in the “Gonzaga Prep Bracket”. There are two separate, eight-team brackets at the double-elimination tournament with the champions of each facing-off for a spot in the AA Legion Regional Tournament.

But after watching his team’s performances against not only league foes but Senior Legion teams as well, Thorpe is confident in his group’s ability to remain on track.

“They played that way all year, they’ve been very consistent,” Thorpe said.

The Gonzaga Prep Bracket includes: Kennewick Phantoms, Foss Tugs, Burlington, Asotin, Mead, Chehalis, Gonzaga Prep and Lakeside. The other bracket is filled by: Anacortes, Richland Knights, Ferris, Montesano, Rainier Baseball, Walla Walla Bruins, Woodinville and University High.

The entire tournament bracket, which will be continuously updated throughout next week, can be found here.
