In front of a spirited crowd at Bellevue High School, Mercer Island rallied from an early deficit to beat Bellevue 14-7 in a game marred with the intensity of a big rivalry.
The first twelve minutes of the game featured eight goals between the two teams, as Bellevue’s Tommy Zervus started off the scoring four minutes in. Kyle Mutzel, one of the league’s leading scorers, got the Wolverines another goal before the Islanders, keyed by Danny Shields, scored three in a row.
With 9:45 left in the second quarter, the rivalry got the best of both teams. A late hit out of bounds resulted in pushing, shoving and many flags. After nearly eight minutes of arguments and confusions, Bellevue was assessed two penalties and Spencer Tierney of Mercer Island (7-0) was ejected.
Matty Shields scored before time expired in the first half to give Mercer Island a 7-5 edge heading into the half. The second half would prove to be all Islanders; Shields scored his third and fourth goals and Danny Shields added a second goal to ice the game for Mercer Island.
Bellevue fell to 4-3 with the loss.
