Seven from Newport set to sign

Newport is hosting a signing day event for seven of its Class of 2014 seniors to sign a National Letter of Intent.

Drew Sample and Conner Baumann, who helped the football team to the 4A state playoffs in the fall, will sign with the University of Washington and Eastern Washington University, respectively.

Kaitlin Sahlinger will sign with Boston University for softball, Will Ferris will join Baumann at Eastern as a member of the men’s basketball team, and Lorea Gwo, who has helped the Knights to the past two 4A state swim and dive team titles, will continue her education and career at Claremont.

Kaylee Nicklos will compete for the University of Oregon Ducks in Acrobatics and Tumbling, which is classified as an NCAA Emerging Sport.

Two-sport star Casey Schoenlein, a force at the net and in the paint, will sign with Washington State University for volleyball.

The ceremony is set to take place at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5 in the Newport High School gym.

The Saints won the KingCo dual behind Albert Furlong’s wins in the 50 free and 100 backstroke, and a win in the 200 medley relay.

Michael Lorr took the 200 free for Interlake, while Jason Cummings won the 500 free.

Wrestling

Bellevue 33 Liberty 36

The Wolverines lost their first dual meet of the season, falling by only three points to Liberty in a KingCo meet.

Garrett Williams won at 138 with a pin, as did Cole Bouwman at 145 and Alec Palander at 285. John Mancuso took his match at 160, also by pin, while Zach England (195) won by decision.
