Newport girls snap Redmond’s streak
Newport’s girls golf team, led by the 38 of medalist Marianne Li, broke a 93 match win streak for Redmond that dates to the early 2000s on Thursday at Bear Creek Country Club in Redmond by a team score of 224-235.
The Mustangs have won the previous eight 4A KingCo titles, another streak the Knights ended with the win.
Li’s 38 also tied the course record at Bear Creek, according to Newport head coach Frank Nimmo.
“They are just so talented and have put in a lot of work,” Nimmo said. “It’s a big monkey off of our backs.”
The Knights lost to Redmond by only one stroke in a match two years ago and again fell by a slim margin last season.
Hannah Christian shot a 43 and 2011 district champion Isabel Chien carded a 44 to help their team to the win.
