Newport wrapped up a third straight 4A boys team tennis state championship, led by boys singles winner Jason Lui and three boys doubles pairs in the top-four.
Lui took care of Ryan Adams from Olympia 6-3, 6-0 to get things started, before winning his quarterfinal match 6-1, 6-0 over Patrick Chung from Cascade.
Lui began the second day with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 win over Garfield’s Oscar Burney in the semifinals, and met another conference foe in Jack Suh from Issaquah with a state title on the line.
The final match ended in a similar fashion, as Lui swept Suh 6-4, 6-2 to claim the 4A state singles championship.
While the Knights did not get a repeat atop the doubles podium, Matt Sham and Austin Gu finished in second place after sweeping their way to the title match.
After a 6-1, 6-1 win in the first round, Sham and Gu beat Trent Prussing and Zach Fisher of Richland 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals to set a date with teammates Alex Namba and Derek Huang.
Sham and Gu prevailed 7-5, 6-2 to earn a berth in the championship match, before falling 6-2, 6-1 to Luke Brittan and Jordan Strandness of Lewis & Clark.
Namba and Huang rebounded from their loss in the semifinals to win the third place match 6-1, 6-2.
Ryan Cheung and Kelvin Yuchen won their first round match 6-3, 6-0, before falling in the quarterfinals to Brittan and Strandness.
They came back from that defeat to win three straight matches, claiming fourth place and helping the Knights to the team scoring title.
Garnett wins third straight singles title
Interlake’s Connor Garnett made it a perfect three for three at state, sweeping aside the competition en route to a third consecutive state championship.
The Saints’ junior beat Hunter Egger of Bellevue 6-4, 6-1 in the first round, before taking care of Janrick Peros from Mount Tahoma 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.
Garnett beat Wyatt DeMulling 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals, and came back later in the day to win the title match 6-2, 6-4 over Daniel Park of Lakeside.
The title was the second straight for Garnett in Class 3A, after beating former teammate and state champion Luat Le in Class 2A during his freshman season of 2011-12.
Egger came back from the first round loss to earn the highest possible finish, claiming a fifth place trophy after three consecutive wins.
He beat Cyrus Stephens of Hanford in the consolation quarterfinals, before sweeping Patrick Luangrath of Glacier Peak 6-0, 6-2.
Dominik Gorecki of Columbia River met a similar fate in the fifth place match, as Egger won 6-2, 6-0.
Teammate Jared Madison won his first match 6-0, 6-0, before falling in three sets in the quarterfinals.
He bounced back to sweep Peros 6-0, 6-0, and won the fourth place match 6-4, 6-2 over Colton Weeldryer of Auburn Mountainview.
Bellevue was second in the team scoring in Class 3A. Interlake finished in fourth place.
The Bellevue School District narrowly missed a state singles sweep, as Sammamish’s Ethan Romney finished in second place in the 2A boys tournament after a 6-3, 6-2 loss in the title match to Ty Gentry of Capital.
Romney won his first two matches 2-0, before beating Alan Kwiatowski of Lindbergh 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals.
Lui finishes perfect, helps Forest Ridge girls to team title
Michelle Lui had little trouble in her quest for a fourth consecutive 1B/2B/1A girls singles championship, sweeping each of her four matches to claim the small school title and cap an undefeated prep career.
Lui beat Isabella James of La Salle 6-0, 6-0 in the first round and sent Chelan’s Megan Robinson to an identical fate in the quarterfinals.
Rebecca Hassle of University Prep had little more luck in the semifinals, as Lui won 6-0, 6-1.
She came back in the title match to earn a 6-4, 6-2 win over Paiton Wagner of Cashmere and claim a fourth state title in as many tries for Forest Ridge.
Lui was far from alone, as the Ravens claimed the team scoring championship with the help of Sasha Cayward and their doubles teams.
Cayward beat Grace Stiles of Zillah 6-0l, 6-1, before falling in the quarterfinals. But she earned a pair of 6-2, 6-0 wins in the consolation bracket to finish in fourth place.
Tiffany and Christina Chai reached the championship match in girls doubles, before falling in a third set tiebreak to finish the tournament in second place.
The Chai sisters won their first match 6-4, 6-0, and earned a semifinal spot with a 6-2, 6-3 victory later in the day.
They picked up another sweep in the semifinals, before losing 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (1) in the finals.
Julia Mayner and Olivia Cero also competed in the doubles bracket, winning their first match and finishing with one win in three matches.
Interlake’s Lina Larson finished in eighth place in the 3A girls singles tournament, falling in the fifth place match 2-1.
Larson lost her first match of the day 2-1, before bouncing back to sweep a pair of matches in the consolation bracket.
