Newport senior exudes leadership on the court

Newport volleyball player was a premier defensive player

Ever since the sixth grade, Acacia Moran has been enamored with the sport of volleyball.

Moran, a senior who was the Knights’ starting Libero on the back row, said playing proficiently as the last line of defense is the first step in creating positive plays on the court.

“Being the person out there who is talking to the other players on the team and helping them out is a really big part of being the Libero. The initial first pass is from the back, so if that pass isn’t there it is difficult to get the set and the hit going. It is a vital part of the game,” Moran said.

The Knights clinched the Class 4A KingCo regular season championship with a 3-0 win against the Issaquah Eagles on Oct. 28. Newport finished the regular season with an overall record of 12-3. The Knights were eliminated from postseason play after suffering a 3-2 loss to the Redmond Mustangs in a loser-out KingCo playoff match on Nov. 3 at Skyline High School in Sammamish. The Knights went 1-2 at the KingCo tournament.
